New Johnsonville Library
In 2010 Wellington City Council identified the need for a new library in Johnsonville to service its growing population (including an expected increase of 10,000 over the next twenty years) and in recognition of Johnsonville's proposed status as the second largest town centre after the CBD. The Council consulted the public between 2011-2014 to find the site and design most favoured.
The New Library Building
Background
The new library promises to be a great addition to Johnsonville's facilities and public spaces, to be built next door to Keith Spry Pool and the Johnsonville Community Centre. It will be built by Athfield Architects at a cost of $16.5 million and will be three times larger than the existing library. It will cover two floors, will include a cafe and will have a covered pedestrian link running between the pool and the library from Moorefield Road through to the carparking area on the north side.

Car Parking Concerns
JCA is concerned about the Council's plan to reduce the number of car parks.
-
Currently there are 25 car parks for users of the pool and community centre, plus 6-8 public car parks and 3-4 staff car parks for the existing library. A total of 37 car parks cover those three facilities.
-
The plans for the new library allow for a total of 28 car parks - 22 in underground and 6 above ground.
-
There will be a net loss of 9 car parks for users of these three facilities.

This makes no sense given the Council's own projected population growth for Johnsonville which is the very reason for building a bigger library. It's a no-brainer: a bigger library needs MORE car parks.
