Johnsonville-Newlands Community Board Proposal

Q: Who would the Johnsonville-Newlands Community Board
represent?

The new Community Board would represent the people of
Johnsonville, Raroa, Woodridge, Paparangi & Newlands.

Q: What would a Johnsonville-Newlands Community Board do?
WCC Community boards have responsibility for overview of matters within their boundary, so a Johnsonville-Newlands Community Board would have influence on decisions made by WCC that directly affect the Johnsonville-Newlands area.

A Johnsonville-Newlands Community Board would represent and advocate for our community by:

  • making recommendations to Council that reflect the views of our community on policies, bylaws & strategies that affect the Johnsonville-Newlands area;

  • liaising with community organisations and government departments; and

  • making written and oral submissions to Council on behalf of the residents of the area.

Q: How would a Johnsonville-Newlands Community Board be any different from the existing residents associations?
A Community Board has direct influence as part of the local government structure. While both the Johnsonville Community Association and the Newlands-Paparangi Progressive Association actively try to represent the views of residents by making submissions on Council policies and meeting regularly with local councillors, they have no formal influence on WCC decision-making.

Q: Why do we need a Community Board when we have City Councillors to represent us?
The Johnsonville-Newlands area is part of the Northern Ward which also includes Churton Park, Glenside, Grenada Village, Grenada North, Horokiwi, Tawa, Takapu Valley and the Ohariu Valley. The three Northern Ward councillors represent all these communities, and some may have needs that conflict with what is best for Johnsonville-Newlands. A Community Board can

  • support the councillors and provide a stronger voice for our communities than the three councillors on their own.

  • help to ensure that WCC listens to the people of Johnsonville-Newlands,

  • Help ensure that a fair proportion of our rates are invested back into the Johnsonville-Newlands area.

Q: How do we get a Community Board?
For our application to be considered by WCC, we must raise a petition of support from at least 10% of all registered voters living in the area. All signatories must include their full name, including middle name/s, for their support to be valid.

For more information, call 027-4441748.

Q: What is a Community Board?
A Community Board is an official part of the local government

structure and members of Community Boards are elected every three years during local body elections.

Q: Are there any existing Community Boards in Wellington?
Yes, both Tawa and Makara/Ohariu have Community Boards.

Q: How do WCC Community Boards fit into the WCC structure?
WCC Community Boards are separate to the Council Committees and Sub-committees. This diagram shows the current WCC Committee and Community Board structure.
